SUMMARY:Building Sector Power Across Los Angeles County
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nWhat becomes possible when we recognize nonprofits as an industry? \nLos Angeles has a nonprofit industry. It is the fourth largest employer in the region\, with much of its economic activity centered on people and local communities. Yet nonprofits are still too often understood primarily as charity rather than as a vital part of our region’s economic infrastructure. \nIt is time to explore a different way of thinking about the sector. \nJoin us for a half day exploratory convening bringing together nonprofit\, foundation\, and government leaders to examine what it could mean to move from charity to infrastructure and build greater sector power across Los Angeles County. \n  \nWhat the Data Tells Us\nNonprofits represent 1.5% of all employer establishments in Los Angeles County\, yet account for 8.5% of employment. The sector generates 12% of economic output and supports 17% of all jobs across the county. \nThis economic impact reflects the unique role nonprofits play in our region. Nonprofits employ people\, provide essential services\, invest in communities\, and direct resources back into the local economy. \nThe data gives us an opportunity to ask a bigger question: If nonprofits are already an economic force in Los Angeles County\, what would change if we started treating them like one? \n  \nFrom Charity to Infrastructure\nHow we understand nonprofits shapes how we support them. \nWhen nonprofits are viewed primarily through the lens of charity\, it influences how they are funded\, included in economic planning\, and understood by government\, philanthropy\, and the broader public. \nRecognizing nonprofits as an industry and essential infrastructure opens the door to a different conversation. One centered on investment\, sustainability\, partnership\, and collective power. \nThis convening is an opportunity to begin that conversation together. \nWhat We’re Exploring\nTogether\, we will explore questions about what it could take to build greater recognition and power for the nonprofit sector across Los Angeles County: \n\nDoes recognizing nonprofits as infrastructure change how we understand the sector’s role and value?\nWhat would it mean to recognize nonprofits as an industry?\nWhat currently prevents the sector from being treated as essential economic infrastructure?\nWhat would greater investment in nonprofit infrastructure look like in practice?\nWhat would nonprofits\, philanthropy\, and government need to do differently to strengthen the sector’s collective power?\n\n  \nWho Should Attend\nThis conversation is designed for \n\nNonprofit executive directors and senior leaders thinking about sector sustainability and growth.\nFoundation and philanthropic leaders are encouraged to attend.\nGovernment leaders and agencies that partner with nonprofits.\n\n  \nIf you are thinking about what comes next for Los Angeles County’s nonprofit sector and how we build greater power together\, we invite you to join this in-person convening.

SUMMARY:Listen\, Learn\, Respond: Making Community Feedback Meaningful
DESCRIPTION:About This Webinar\nPlease note that this is a free virtual event. \nMost nonprofits gather feedback in some way. But are we asking for feedback to help us decide which programs to scale up\, sunset\, or re-imagine? How can we ask the right questions\, hear what our communities are telling us\, and use that information to guide our decisions? \nWith funding and community needs shifting\, nonprofits are making important decisions about programs\, services\, and resources. It is easier to make decisions the community can understand when we take into consideration what their communities value and need. \nJoin CNM for a conversation facilitated by Listen4Good exploring what meaningful community feedback can look like\, and the many ways organizations can use this information for good. Through practical insights and real-world examples\, we’ll look at how feedback can challenge assumptions we make\, surface what matters most to the people we serve\, and help us feel grounded as we make important decisions about our programs and services. \nWhether you already have a feedback process or are figuring out where to begin\, this session will offer ideas you can take back to your organization. \n\n  \nWhat We’ll Explore\n\nWhat a strong community feedback loop looks like and practices that can make feedback more meaningful and useful.\nHow organizations with different programs and services are using community feedback to strengthen their programs and increase their impact.\nHow to recognize what’s working in your organization’s current feedback practices and where there may be opportunities to strengthen them.\nPractical starting points for making community feedback a more useful part of your organization’s work and decision-making.\n\n\n  \nWho Should Attend\nThis webinar is for nonprofit professionals interested in strengthening how their organizations listen to and learn from the communities they serve\, particularly those involved in program planning and delivery\, organizational strategy\, community engagement\, evaluation\, data\, or fundraising. \nFunders and philanthropic partners interested in community-informed approaches are also welcome. \n  \nFacilitator Bio:\nHeidi Elneil\, Senior Coordinator of Partner Services – Listen4Good \nHeidi Elneil is the Senior Coordinator of Partner Services at Listen4Good and\, in that role\, is the first thought partner that nonprofits have in assessing and strengthening their feedback processes. Before coming to Listen4Good she was the “youth person” for organizations around California – helping develop youth programming and leadership opportunities. She spent years focusing on strengths-based leadership and organizational development and is a certified LEGO Serious Play facilitator. \nAbout Listen4Good \nListen4Good builds nonprofits’ skills to gather and use feedback from the people they serve – turning it into insights for program improvement\, fundraising\, strategic planning\, and equity work. Participating organizations get 1:1 coaching\, group learning\, and a web application with tools and best practices for building strong feedback loops. Since 2016\, Listen4Good has supported over 1\,250 organizations through its 18-month capacity-building program.

SUMMARY:Financial Planning: The Story Behind the Spreadsheet and the Path Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nFor many nonprofit leaders\, financial anxiety didn’t start with budgets and spreadsheets — it started at home. Long before anyone learned to read a balance sheet\, they absorbed a money story: beliefs about debt\, risk\, saving\, and what it means to be “good with money\,” shaped by race\, class\, culture\, and generational experience. Nobody sits you down and teaches you this story. You just learn to carry it\, usually without realizing that’s what you’re doing. \nThis virtual seminar\, hosted by CNM in partnership with BDO\, starts by putting that story into words instead of pretending it doesn’t belong in a professional development conversation. Most nonprofit leaders carry real fear around finances\, and it isn’t a personal failing that needs to be managed alone; it comes from actual structural conditions\, and it’s worth saying out loud in a room full of people carrying something similar. \nA first-generation professional often learns to manage money with no family blueprint for it. For someone else\, class background already decided what counts as acceptable risk before they ever ran a budget line. Culture and generational history draw the line between what gets discussed openly and what stays private\, long before anyone creates a budget or looks at a spreadsheet. \nOnce that ground is set\, we move into strategies and actions: what does real planning looks like when facing a 10%\, 15%\, or 30% funding cut\, when multi-year projections seem unrealistic to plan for and surviving month-to-month has become standard operating procedure rather than navigating through crisis. \nTopics of Discussion\nKey Financial Metrics \nLearn which numbers truly matter for your organization’s financial health\, and how to read them in a way that informs everyday decisions. \nAssessing Revenue and Expense Risk \nTake a clear look at your revenue mix through the lenses of flexibility\, diversity\, and predictability\, and examine your expense structure to see where you have room (or no room) to maneuver. This helps you understand where your organization is most vulnerable—and where you may have more options than you think. \nScenario Planning for Uncertainty \nPractice building simple\, realistic scenarios for 10%\, 15%\, and 30% revenue reductions. Instead of waiting for cuts to happen and reacting in crisis\, you’ll learn how to sketch out options in advance so that conversations with your team and board can be calmer\, clearer\, and more values aligned. \nCash Flow Planning \nMoving from “month‑to‑month survival” to clearer short‑term planning\, understanding how cash flows in and out across the year and what that means for day‑to‑day decision \nWho Should Attend:\n\nLeaders and staff of smaller nonprofits (3M or less in operating)\nOrganizations led by or serving people of color\, first‑generation professionals\, and immigrant communities\nExecutive directors\, finance/operations staff\, and program leaders who play a role in budgeting\, planning\, or financial decision-making

SUMMARY:Evaluation and Data Systems for Maximum Impact
DESCRIPTION:About This Event:\nMost nonprofits aren’t short on data — they’re short on systems to make it useful. This seminar focuses on the infrastructure side of organizational learning: how to build evaluation practices and data systems that actually work in resource-constrained environments. Participants examine what it takes to move from scattered data collection to coherent\, decision-ready information. The goal isn’t a perfect system. It’s a functional one that your organization can maintain\, learn from\, and improve over time.  \n  \nTopics of Discussion: \n\nBuilding evaluation infrastructure without a dedicated data team \nMoving from scattered data collection to coherent\, usable information \nSelecting and maintaining data systems that fit your resources \nTurning data into decisions: what that actually looks like in practice \nSustaining evaluation practices over time in resource-constrained environments \n\n  \nWho Should Attend: \nExecutive directors\, program managers\, and operations staff responsible for evaluation\, learning\, or data especially those navigating the gap between what their organization tracks and what they actually need to know.  \n  \nFacilitator Bio:\nPassionate about real transformation\, Cynthia approaches adult learning as a delicate balance between business management skills\, self-assuredness\, and a clear sense of purpose. Trained as a mixed-methods program evaluator\, her approach blends spiritual tenants with change management strategies.  Cynthia holds a MA from UCLA in Social Research Methodology\, a BA from UC Berkeley in Peace and Conflict Studies and Education and is a graduate of Dr. Yasmin Davidds’ Multicultural Women Executive Leadership Program.

SUMMARY:Rooted & Leading: First Generational Professionals in the Nonprofit Sector
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nMany nonprofit leaders carry something into the room that doesn’t show up in their resume: the experience of being the first — first in their family to hold a professional role\, first in their community to access certain spaces\, or first in their organization to lead from a particular identity. This webinar names that experience directly and explores what it means to lead from it — not despite it. Participants will examine how identity and lived experience shape leadership style\, organizational culture\, and the way we carry authority. This is not a workshop about overcoming your background. It’s about understanding what you already bring.  \n\nTopics of Discussion: \nHow first-generation and lived experience identities show up in professional leadership contexts. The difference between managing identity in the workplace and leading from it. How your background shapes your relationship to authority\, hierarchy\, and accountability. Organizational dynamics that can activate imposter experience — and tools for navigating them. Connecting personal leadership identity to organizational culture and team dynamics  \n\nWho Should Attend: \nNonprofit professionals who identify as first-generation\, who have led from lived experience\, or who are navigating the tension between personal identity and professional authority.  \n\nFacilitator Bio: \nDr. Rigoberto Marquez is a first generation professional and comes to CNM with powerful educational and professional experiences at the intersections of inclusion\, equity\, access\, integrative learning\, and transformational change. SUMMARY:Sustaining the Nonprofit Workforce: Strengthening HR Operations

SUMMARY:State of the Sector Series: LA Well-Being Insights From Measure of America
DESCRIPTION:Description\nNonprofit organizations are navigating increasing complexity across the communities they serve. CNM’s State of the Sector Series brings together research and real-world context to help nonprofit professionals better understand the broader conditions shaping their work.  \nThis virtual event will feature researchers from Measure of America presenting findings from A Portrait of Los Angeles County 2026\, examining how people across the county are faring in health\, education\, and economic opportunity. Grounded in engagement with community members across the county\, the report goes beyond statistics to reflect the lived conditions shaping our communities.  \nFindings from the report will be highlighted\, along with trends shaping well-being across Los Angeles County.  \nAcross Los Angeles County\, outcomes vary significantly by geography\, race\, and income. For example\, a baby born in Westwood can expect to live 16 more years than one born in Sun Village\, and over 133\,000 young people are neither in school nor working. These disparities provide important context for nonprofit organizations working across the region.  \nThis event is offered at no cost and is open to the nonprofit community.  \nWho Should Attend\nThis event is ideal for nonprofit professionals who want to better understand the conditions shaping the communities they serve\, including executive directors\, program staff\, development professionals\, and board members across the Greater Los Angeles area.  \nAbout Measure of America\nMeasure of America (MOA) promotes fact-based public debate about well-being and access to opportunity in the United States\, focusing on three issues Americans care deeply about: health\, education\, and standard of living. Through national and state reports\, thematic briefs\, and interactive websites such as DATA2GO.NYC\, Measure of America aims to breathe life into numbers\, using data to create compelling narratives that foster greater understanding of our shared challenges and greater support for people-centered policies.

SUMMARY:Financial Implications of Current Federal Policy: An Examination of Field Differences and Responses
DESCRIPTION:Summary\n\n\n\nThe effects of the current federal retrenchment on nonprofits are profound and sector-wide\, but it is definitely hitting some fields harder than others. In this session\, NPGPS presents an analysis of field-specific differences\, looking also at their responses to those stresses. \nAmong the fields we will look at are public broadcasting and other politically targeted groups\, behavioral and community health organizations\, and food security groups. What have each of these groups learned in the past decade that informs their responses\, and what are the differences in what solutions are available to one rather than another? These are among the many questions we will take up.
