What if we looked at Los Angeles County’s nonprofit sector not just as a collection of mission-driven organizations, but as an economic force?

A new report from the Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM) and the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) Institute for Applied Economics offers a different view. Drawing on IRS Form 990 filings, Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and input-output modeling, the report examines 27,916 active nonprofit organizations across Los Angeles County and measures the sector’s contributions to employment, economic output, labor income, and public revenue.

The findings make the scale of the sector clear: nonprofits contribute approximately $185.6 billion in economic output, support an estimated 1.16 million jobs, and generate approximately $28 billion in federal, state, and local tax revenue each year.
