Financial Planning: The Story Behind the Spreadsheet and the Path Ahead

Money stories start at home, not at work. This seminar names them honestly, then builds…

Overview

For many nonprofit leaders, financial anxiety didn’t start with budgets and spreadsheets — it started at home. Long before anyone learned to read a balance sheet, they absorbed a money story: beliefs about debt, risk, saving, and what it means to be “good with money,” shaped by race, class, culture, and generational experience. Nobody sits you down and teaches you this story. You just learn to carry it, usually without realizing that’s what you’re doing.

This virtual seminar, hosted by CNM in partnership with BDO, starts by putting that story into words instead of pretending it doesn’t belong in a professional development conversation. Most nonprofit leaders carry real fear around finances, and it isn’t a personal failing that needs to be managed alone; it comes from actual structural conditions, and it’s worth saying out loud in a room full of people carrying something similar.

A first-generation professional often learns to manage money with no family blueprint for it. For someone else, class background already decided what counts as acceptable risk before they ever ran a budget line. Culture and generational history draw the line between what gets discussed openly and what stays private, long before anyone creates a budget or looks at a spreadsheet.

Once that ground is set, we move into strategies and actions: what does real planning looks like when facing a 10%, 15%, or 30% funding cut, when multi-year projections seem unrealistic to plan for and surviving month-to-month has become standard operating procedure rather than navigating through crisis.

Topics of Discussion

Key Financial Metrics

Learn which numbers truly matter for your organization’s financial health, and how to read them in a way that informs everyday decisions.

Assessing Revenue and Expense Risk

Take a clear look at your revenue mix through the lenses of flexibility, diversity, and predictability, and examine your expense structure to see where you have room (or no room) to maneuver. This helps you understand where your organization is most vulnerable—and where you may have more options than you think.

Scenario Planning for Uncertainty

Practice building simple, realistic scenarios for 10%, 15%, and 30% revenue reductions. Instead of waiting for cuts to happen and reacting in crisis, you’ll learn how to sketch out options in advance so that conversations with your team and board can be calmer, clearer, and more values aligned.

Cash Flow Planning

Moving from “month‑to‑month survival” to clearer short‑term planning, understanding how cash flows in and out across the year and what that means for day‑to‑day decision
