Women make up 51% of the US population and 70% of the nonprofit workforce. As we recognize #InternationalWomensDay, board members have a role to play as a force for important change. Exceptional boards govern in constructive partnership with the chief executive. Given the current atmosphere they cannot ignore this important opportunity to take responsibility for setting clear expectations and zero tolerance for harassment or abuse in the workplace. We are a sector driven by helping others and often reluctant to take care of ourselves. Boards need to take a closer look at how they will provide proper oversight for both policies and practices. Reports of sexual harassment should be brought to the board’s attention to ensure that the chief executive and senior staff are held accountable, issues are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. It is up to the board to ensure that senior management sets a positive example, treating all employees with dignity and respect.
