Earlier this year, CNM partnered with Alliance for Girls (AFG) to produce and present resources for girls and gender-expansive youth in California. An alliance of more than 120 organizations, Alliance for Girls champions leaders and groups that transform communities and work toward systemic change for girls.
Girls and gender-expansive youth in California and across the country face ongoing challenges around gender equality and parity. For example, an Alliance for Girls report on the experiences of girls during the COVID-19 pandemic found that almost half of the girls surveyed said they had more caregiving responsibilities than before the pandemic, with 31% noting that these new caregiving responsibilities had affected their educational progress, and COVID-19’s impact on students’ learning is still being felt today.
Through partnership with Alliance for Girls, CNM compiled data about the resources and programs for girls and gender-expansive youth in LA County. This work informs Alliance for Girls’ expansion into LA County and contributed to the directory found on the AFG Resource Hub. Titled Hear Their Voices: The Experiences of Girls & Gender-Expansive Youth in South and Southeast Los Angeles, this research, which includes a mapping report, summary brief, and heat map, provides an overview of local support services and the unique needs of LA youth.
This past May, the CNM team joined the Alliance for Girls Los Angeles kickoff to announce AFG’s expansion into LA County and share the research findings. After an engaging launch, 96% of participants completing the post-event survey said they were more knowledgeable about resources and programs available to girls and gender-expansive youth in the region.
