Research and Evaluation

Advancing knowledge about our sector, partners, and communities by employing data-driven and equity-based research practices.

In working towards a more inclusive economy, CNM advances understanding about the nonprofit sector by:

  • Serving as a central information hub about the state of the nonprofit sector by collecting vital data on its health, diversity, growth, and workforce. We gather and examine data about our sector to study the important role of nonprofits in Southern California’s vibrant economy and communities.
  • Mobilizing knowledge about the sector and subsectors. We identify and elevate the needs of nonprofits and the communities being served, functioning as a key source of information for influential decision-makers, including philanthropy and local and state government.
  • Being a trusted nonprofit partner to support organizations and communities in improving systems, processes, programs, and services through evaluation and technical assistance. We rely on qualitative and quantitative research tools to assess impact, produce data-driven insights, and strengthen best practices across the sector.
  • Providing assessment, resources, and workshops that nurture and build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, in collaboration with our Action & Engagement and Learning & Innovation teams. Growing partnerships with government and philanthropy ensure that resources are effectively leveraged so that diverse community needs are met with comprehensive support, up-to-date knowledge, and proven solutions.

What We Do

CNM has extensive experience with qualitative and quantitative research.  Conducting focus groups, interviews, surveys, and analyses, we draw from data provided by other organizations, public data sources, and our own sector insights and reports.

  • We study trends in the social impact sector.
  • We provide evaluation, impact measurement, and technical assistance for community partner projects and initiatives.
  • We create learning materials that include publications, seminars, and virtual training.

We increase nonprofit knowledge to uplift the economic and social value of the sector and the communities we serve and represent.
