This introductory course will cover both legal and programmatic fundamentals, including best practices for designing successful programs, recruiting an effective board, developing a sustainable fundraising plan, forming a California nonprofit corporation and applying for tax exemption, and complying with ongoing tax and legal requirements.

You will walk away with valuable resources, templates, tools, and tips on topics most critical to planning, forming, and growing a new nonprofit organization.

We will cover:

  • Keys to Effective Strategic Planning and Program Development: Understanding the Why, the Mission, Goals/Objectives, the Organizational Assessment, and Evaluating Impact
  • Well-Functioning Boards: Board requirements, good governance, and roles and responsibilities
  • Resource Development in the Current Economic Environment: Creating a comprehensive fundraising plan, and the grant and donor seeking landscape
  • Corporate and Tax Compliance: Starting a nonprofit corporation, applying for tax exemption and ongoing compliance. Fiscal Sponsorship as an alternative to starting a new nonprofit organization

Virtual Seminar

Optimized for the virtual environment, this 2.5-hour seminar will consist of presentations, group discussions, breakout group sessions, polls, and short breaks. This is an opportunity to do a deep dive into a new topic and leave with tools that you can put into practice immediately.

Instructors:

Annie Marquit – Senior Staff Attorney, Public Counsel

Annie is a senior staff attorney with Public Counsel’s Community Development Project. She has provided educational trainings and direct legal services to numerous LA-based nonprofits on a range of matters, such as nonprofit formation, governance, fiscal sponsorship, fundraising, and lobbying restrictions. Prior to working at Public Counsel, Annie represented low-income seniors at risk of losing their homes due to foreclosure and real estate fraud. Annie graduated from Columbia College and Columbia Law School and clerked for New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Barry T. Albin.

Alicia K. Avalos – Strategist, Center for Nonprofit Management

A native Angeleno, Alicia has 22 years of leadership experience in city government and several social service agencies, directing successful programs including Summer Night Lights. Most recently at Chrysalis, she was a Program Manager for a rapid rehousing program providing employment services to those who were justice-involved. At CNM, she supports the client services staff, leads client contact and service activities, and maintains good relationships with clients and colleagues. Her dual background in city government and nonprofit program management gives her experience in managing project development and implementation. Alicia holds a BA in Communications & Fine Arts from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA.
